CA/NV SECTIONAL CHAMPS A GREAT SUCCESS FOR FULLERTON

Brian Brown

550 swimmers traveled to Fullerton over the weekend to compete in the 2023 CA/NV Sectional Championships held at the Janet Evans Swim Complex.  The event attracted teams from three countries (Canada, China, Mexico) as well as non-California swimmers from across the United States (Arizona, Guam, Nevada, New Jersey).

Of the 60 teams in attendance, three teams emerged as overall winners: Scarlet Aquatics (Large Division), FAST Swim Team (Medium Division), and Sun Devil Swimming (Small Division).

Although nearly 50 years old, the venerable JESC pool presented athletes with a great opportunity to swim fast and the level of competition was very high -- 2 Olympic Trial cuts (by FAST's Matthew Chai, 800/1500M Freestyle), 3 TYR Pro Swim Meet cuts and 52 Junior National performances.

FAST itself performed exceedingly well:

  • 1 new Winter Junior National time -- Kevin Yum (800M Freestyle)
  • 55 personal best times
  • 16 new National Age Group Motivational times (5 "AAAA", 6 "AAA", 4 "AA", 1 "A")

Thanks to the combined efforts of parent volunteers, officials, admin, and coaches the environment of the meet was incredible.  The atmosphere created by everyone in attendance certainly deserves some of the credit for the awesome results.

FAST is already looking forward to hosting the event again next year, July 18-21, 2024.
