Who's in That Lane?
Well, that's Kathy Lany, a 10-year member of the FAST Masters Team! Kathy is a California native, born in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in 1961. Her family moved to Palm Springs where she entered the swimming world. She was part of the "original" age group team, the Palm Springs Piranhas! In time, Kathy's family moved to Fullerton where she attended Sunny Hills High School, graduating in 1979. She swam at Sunny Hills! She then moved down the road to San Diego State University, where she received her B.A. Her career started with Procter & Gamble in a sales management position, taking part in launching new products. She's proud to say that in her 34 years at P&G she took part in the introduction of big brands, such as Swiffer and Febreze, just to mention two big ones! Kathy now spends her time as an accomplished real estate agent with Century 21 Discovery Realty, here in Fullerton. If you've driven by the marquee at Valencia Mesa & Harbor over the years, you've probably seen her name posted as a top producer! WOW!
Kathy met her husband, Karl, when she worked for P&G in Denver. They have enjoyed 34 years of marriage. They have two daughters, Maddy, 32, and Ali, 28. Both girls attended Troy High School. Maddy swam and played water polo and is now a counselor at a San Juan Capistrano charter school. Ali was the 2013 CIF player of the year in water polo, winning a CIF championship for Troy High School. She is now a personal trainer in Napa California. Kathy's interests include travel, enjoying the beach, gardening, and entertaining! She's also fond of wine tasting and trying new cocktails, her favorite being a good Manhattan or a Gin and Tonic! (I'm down for the G&T)!
Kathy feels her cherished accomplishments are her two girls, 34 years of marriage, and her community activism! The best things that Kathy recounts in her life, is her family and her health. Getting up for Masters in the morning is tough, but the exercise and camaraderie of the group keep her coming back to the pool with her friends. She truly enjoys her open water swims (even in cold water)! She has participated in the Newport pier to pier swim, Corona Del Mar, and around the Huntington Beach pier swims. This friendly lady, whose family I have known for decades in Fullerton, exemplifies many traits that make her a leader and one of the kindest people I've ever met. Her hope for the future, which she understands starts with one person, would be to make it a kinder world! She's also thinking, one day, it would be fulfilling/cool to be a grandmother! In time Kathy, that will probably happen.
It was my pleasure to sit across from this kind, gentle, intelligent, and accomplished woman and get to know her a little better. I hope you enjoyed getting to know her better as well. Say hello to her next time you see her poolside, her infectious, gentle manor will always brighten your day, or you may understand what it means to be a little kinder!
Thanks, Kathy!
