FAST End of Spring Updates

Brian Brown

FAST Families,

As usual, we have lots going on here at FAST, so I am writing to share what we are looking forward to this summer.

  • This week local high school swimmers from FAST are competing in their League Championships.  We have already seen some great swims from prelim competitions and are looking forward to fantastic results in the finals later this week.  Those who qualify for CIF Championships will begin competing next and any swimmers who make States will go one week further – Good luck!
  • Coach James Gallagher will be leading a group traveling to Las Vegas to race in the SAND Cinco de Mayo meet.  This long course prelims/finals meet promises to challenge our FAST crew and bring out the best in them – Buena suerte!
  • Senior II/National qualifiers have the opportunity to attend the NOVA Grand Challenge meet on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25.  Please speak with Coaches Brian Brown and Keith Moore to discuss participation.
  • Save the Date!  FAST will host an all-team event on Saturday, May 31st at JESC.  Food and beverages will be served after morning practice and our graduating seniors will be honored.  Please make time to attend this fun event.  More details soon.
  • Masters team practices have been growing, and the team is literally “shaping up”.  Thirty adult swimmers of all ages and abilities regularly attend workouts led by Coach Paul Davidson.  Parents, if you haven’t already done so, come try a practice (no charge) and see what your swimmers do every day – honestly, it’s impressive!
  • Tryouts for the FAST Summer League team are underway.  This fun seasonal activity is a great way to enjoy the summer and get introduced to competitive swimming.  Coached by FAST swimmers and alumni, and led by Coaches Paul Davidson and Amy Barrett, this 8-week program beginning June 2nd is awesome!  Contact Coach Lauren (lmorford@fastswimming.net) for more information and don’t be shy about telling a friend!
  • Adult learn-to-swim lessons are offered by Coach John Jamieson weekday mornings and Saturday afternoons. If you or someone you know wants to learn to swim (or improve) John provides a patient, adults-only environment to do so.
  • Summer Season at the Janet Evans Swim Complex begins Tuesday, June 3rd.
    • Tuesday through Sunday we offer Lap Swim is in one-hour slots from 12:00-3:00 PM in the Olympic pool ($4.00) and Family/Recreational Swim from 12:00-3:00 PM in the small pool ($2.00).
    • Outdoor summer swim lessons are offered in 2-week sessions, Tuesday through Friday. These low-cost learn-to-swim lessons are the best deal in town! Details and registration information can be found online at www.fullertonaquatics.org.
  • FAST swimming lessons, including the Swim Team Prep program, continue at the indoor pool. If you are interested or know someone who is, please contact Christina Reese (csanchez@fastswimming.net).
  • Coaches James Gallagher, Alex Fronek and Amy Barrett will continue organizing practice meets, including the FAST Finale on July 14th & 15th. Parents, if your child is swimming, we highly encourage you to support them and their chosen sport by timing and/or working at the administrative tent.
  • FAST will host the 3rd annual Jon Urbanchek Invitational.  Coach Jon, who passed on May 9th last year, was a wonderful friend to the FAST program which he founded five decades ago.  Thus far we have 28 FAST qualifiers for this home meet, and we will need assistance from those families to host a great meet.  In past years Masters and NAG swimmers rallied to time one morning session each and we are hope these volunteers are available again.  Look for a job sign up soon and come help FAST honor Coach Jon and his legacy!
  • On Sunday June 29th FAST will host an inaugural Water Safety Day event at JESC.  Coach Jon’s goal is for our organization to set a world record for the number of people floating in the pool!  Free introductions to floating and basic skill will be available to anyone from the community.  Stay tuned for more details and tell a friend!

That’s an overview of what is happening now and in the near future.  Thanks for being part of FAST!
