In his first-ever international competition FAST's Matthew Chai won the 400, 800 and 1500-meter Freestyle events last weekend in Vancouver. Matthew traveled with the USA National Junior Team to compete in the 57th Annual Mel Zajac Meet, which was held at the University of British Columbia. The competition featured top swimmers from all over Canada as well as selected athletes from the United States. Matthew Chai, Kailee Chow and Skyler Kao, all swimmers at Fullerton Aquatics Sports Team (FAST), each won the 500-yard freestyle in their divisions at the CIF Southern Section Championships on May 7. The following weekend, Chai won the event at the statewide championships in Fresno. At the Southern Section Championships, Chai set a CIF DII record of 4:15.91, breaking the 39-year-old record set by Jeff Kostoff in 1983. At the California championships on May 14, Chai won the 500-yard freestyle and set a state record with a time of 4:15.09....

At the FAST Closed Invite last weekend FAST swimmers took advantage of their opportunity to swim Long Course Meters events by recording 227 new official times. Team athletes also posted 63 new personal best times in events they have previously swum. Now that our database is full of real times (and far fewer "No Time" entries) it will be motivating to see measurable improvements. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Congratulations all the FAST swimmers who competed in the CIF Southern Section Championships this past weekend. FAST was well-represented in the finals of each division. FAST successfully hosted the Orange Committee April BB Min meet at the Janet Evans Swim Complex on April 23-24. 37 FAST swimmers performed excellently and combined for 118 best times (59%) and 70 new USAS National Age Group times (3 "AAA", 15 "AA", 16 "A", 26 "BB, 10 "B"). Congratulations on these great early-season results. Our next opportunity to race will be the FAST/Trident/Dare Tri-Meet on May 14. Last week in Greensboro, NC Matthew Chai set three team records and claimed two Top-8 finishes in the USA Swimming World Championship Trials event. Posting 100% best times in three events, Matthew finished 5th (1500M Free), 7th (800M Free), and 17th (400M Free) and was one of the top 18U swimmers in the meet. At the United States Masters Swimming Spring National Championships this past weekend in San Antonio, TX Bob Bergstrom won three medals. Swimming in the 80-84 age group, the FAST veteran struck gold in the 200 Yard Backstoke and bronze in the 100 Yard Backstroke. Bob also demonstrated his mastery of pacing in the distance events (look at those descending splits!) while earning a bronze in the 1,000 Freestyle and a fourth place finish in the 500. Matthew Chai swam to victory in two events at the Swim Meet Of Champions and established two new 17-18 team records over the weekend. Matthew's 800 Meter Freestyle time of 8:07.22 (Previous Record: Matthew Chai -- 8:08.21, 11/12/2020) and 1500 Meter time of 15:32.34 (Previous Record: Matthew Chai -- 15:39.65, 1/23/2021) rank him 74th and 98th on the USA Swimming All-Time Top 100 list. FAST Alumni Simon Lamar finished 7th in the USAS 10K Open Water Championships in Fort Myers Beach, FL over the weekend. Weather conditions made the race especially challenging. The competition featured international swimmers from France, The Netherlands and The Czech Republic in addition to top American qualfiers. By finishing as the 5th place American (2:08.77) Simon requalified for the USA National Team. Simon was also 5th in the 5K race (58:26) and finished as the third American. The FAST Distance Dogfight meet last weekend kicked off the LCM season in style with 160+ swimmers able to compete in many events for the first time. The competition featured all the freestyle events (except the 50) and allowed swimmers to challenge themselves with multiple races back-to-back. FAST swimmers achieved 58 new personal best times and recorded 37 new USAS NAG Times (2 "AAA", 8 "AA", 3 "A", 17 "BB" and 7 "B").
